Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS
AVCOG collects Household Hazardous Wastes at the Environmental Depot in Lewiston and at one day collections in our three county region (Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford).
Any Maine resident or property owner can bring Household Hazardous Waste to the Environmental Depot or to a Regional One-Day Collection. Details follow.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEPOT
Location: At the Lewiston Solid Waste Facility, 424 River Road in Lewiston, near the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. view the map . Hours: 8:00 AM and Noon on the first and third Saturdays of each month, except holiday weekends from May through November, 2010.
Participation: Residents of participating towns – many towns in the AVCOG region - can drop off up to 10 gallons of HHW at no cost. Other residents will be charged a collection fee. See Participation Info below.
REGIONAL ONE-DAY COLLECTIONS: AVCOG will also be sponsoring collections at various sites throughout the region (Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties). The events are open to all Maine residents with those from participating towns able to participate at no cost. The collection day schedule follows:

MATERIALS ACCEPTED: oil based paints, pesticides, gasoline, pool chemicals, solvent based cleaners, photographic chemicals, and other hazardous or toxic materials. Smoke detectors are also collected.
FREE TO PARTICIPATING TOWNS: Residents of participating towns can drop off up to 10 gallons at no cost. Some towns will make arrangements for residents to drop off more than the 10 gallon limit at no cost to the resident. Contact your town office for more details.
COST INFORMATION: Residents from other towns or residents having more than 10 gallons can pay a fee. The fee is $27.50 for 5 gallons or any part thereof. Cash and checks made payable to Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments (AVCOG) are accepted as payment.
HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN THE COLLECTION OR USE THE DEPOT?
1. Determine if you live in a participating town (see link above) 2. Estimate the amount of waste you have:
Residents from participating towns: the no cost – 10 gallon amount includes: Up to 10 gallons of liquid waste; or Up to 40 pounds of dry waste; or A combination of liquid and dry waste (for example, 4 gallons of liquid and 20 pounds of dry).
It also includes up to 5 fluorescent bulbs of any size and shape in addition to the above liquid or dry wastes.
A Smoke detector may be substituted for one gallon of waste or if brought separately has a disposal cost of $5.00.
Residents of other towns: $27.50 covers
Up to 5 gallons of liquid waste; orUp to 20 pounds of dry waste; orA combination of liquid and dry waste (for example, 2 gallons of liquid and 10 pounds of dry).It also includes up to 5 fluorescent bulbs of any size and shape in addition to the above liquid or dry wastes.A Smoke detector may be substituted for one gallon of waste or if brought separately has a disposal cost of $5.00.
3. Pack materials in original, secure containers if possible;
If original containers are leaking, place in plastic bag, and or corrugated box
4. Place in trunk, rear of station wagon/SUV, or in truck bed. Do not place in passenger compartment, if possible and bring directly to drop off or collection. 5. For safety and insurance purposes, please remain in your vehicle when at the facility or collection event.
